Who should choose this Makita?
This is a system purchase as much as a mower purchase. The full-size steel deck, drive assistance and large included batteries make sense when you want a sturdy mower for regular work. They are less persuasive when a compact push mower can comfortably manage the whole lawn.
The biggest compatibility question is simple: do you own XGT or LXT? The GML01PL is a 40V max XGT mower. Familiar Makita branding does not make 18V LXT batteries interchangeable. An LXT-only owner should compare the cost and usefulness of establishing another battery system before treating this as a natural upgrade.
PL and SM are different packages
The GML01PL includes two BL4080F 8Ah batteries and the DC40RB dual-port rapid charger. The GML01SM uses a different battery package. Makita's parts bulletin also distinguishes the standard blade: PL has the high-lift 191W87-2, while SM and Z list the standard 191V96-5.
That blade distinction is useful when comparing apparently similar offers. The dedicated mulching blade 191Y65-4 is listed as an optional accessory; the supplied mower still supports mulching with its plug. Do not assume every blade named in a manual is included.
| Item | GML01PL check |
|---|---|
| Battery platform | 40V max XGT; not 18V LXT |
| Included packs | Two BL4080F 8Ah |
| Charger | DC40RB dual-port rapid |
| Clipping equipment | Bag and frame, high-lift blade, mulch plug and side chute |
| Cut and deck | 21-inch cutting width; 22-inch deck |
Automatic switching is different from simultaneous power
The two bays automatically switch between packs. This is not an 80V mower simply because two 40V max batteries fit beneath the cover. It also differs from the Milwaukee 2823-22HD, which requires two M18 batteries together for operation.
Makita's up-to-1.2-acre coverage statement is a manufacturer claim using the two 8Ah packs. It is a planning reference rather than a promise for a particular lawn. A large open maintenance cut and a damp, interrupted lawn create different workloads. Leave margin for turns, growth and the clipping mode you actually use.
Match the blade and attachments to the clipping mode
The specified PL kit includes a 21-inch high-lift blade, grass bag and frame, mulching plug and side-discharge chute. Those are useful, distinct pieces of equipment. Match the installed blade and attachment arrangement to the instructions for the mode you intend to use; the presence of a plug does not make every blade configuration identical.
Makita lists the included high-lift blade as 191W87-2; the dedicated mulching blade 191Y65-4 is a different accessory. Confirm the exact compatible part and whether an optional blade needs to be budgeted for before ordering replacements. Isolate the mower and follow the operator instructions for changing blades or clearing the clipping path. These equipment checks establish the configuration, not a measured cut-quality ranking.
Choose the mode for the task
Makita provides normal, soft no-load and noise-reduction modes. The manual's specification table lists 2,800 rpm in normal mode, with noise reduction at 2,300 rpm. These are operating settings, not measured noise levels. A lower-speed mode should not be presented as proof of a particular decibel reduction at the user's ear.
The variable-speed rear drive and single height lever offer two separate adjustments: walking pace and cutting height. Decide whether you want these controls before paying for drive assistance. On a manageable level lawn, a simpler push mower may remove a layer of operation you do not need.
Measure the mower, not just its cutting width
The manual lists stored dimensions without the grass basket of 23⅝ by 23½ by 36¾ inches. Operating length varies from 68 to 71 inches with handle position. Those figures are more useful for storage planning than the 21-inch cut specification. Allow additional clearance to move and turn it through a doorway.
The folded handle helps reduce the footprint, but a steel-deck mower still requires a practical transport plan. Battery and attachment combinations affect weight, so compare the same configuration when assessing alternatives. Use the approved blade and exact parts listing for the received version, rather than ordering by blade length alone.
Meaningful alternatives to the GML01PL
The main electric mower guide places this kit alongside simpler choices. Choose the alternative that resolves a real ownership constraint rather than assuming a larger battery package is always better.
| Alternative | Reason to consider it | Decision-changing difference |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee 2823-22HD | You have an established M18 system | Two packs work simultaneously; different paddle controls |
| EGO LM2156SP | You value interchangeable lower blades | Different blade package and drive interface |
| EGO LM2114 | Your lawn is level and comfortable to push | Simpler full-size push format without drive assistance |
Before you buy
Do not infer that the PL kit is discontinued because Makita marks the bare GML01Z as discontinued. Its official bare-model page lists PL and SM as replacement packages. Check the exact kit, seller and documentation rather than applying one variant's status across the whole range.
- Confirm GML01PL, two BL4080F 8Ah packs and DC40RB charger.
- Check that high-lift blade 191W87-2 and the clipping attachments are supplied.
- Keep XGT and LXT compatibility separate.
- Measure storage and transport access with the bag removed and fitted as appropriate.
- Consider your usual grass and clipping method before prioritizing side discharge.
Common questions
Can the GML01PL use LXT batteries?
No. This model uses Makita XGT batteries, not the 18V LXT system.
Do the two batteries make it an 80V mower?
No. It is a 40V max XGT mower with automatic battery-bay switching.
Is a dedicated mulching blade included?
The parts bulletin lists high-lift blade 191W87-2 as standard on PL. Dedicated mulching blade 191Y65-4 is optional; the mower can still mulch using its supplied configuration and plug.
Does the kit guarantee mowing 1.2 acres?
No. That is Makita's maximum coverage claim with two 8Ah packs. Actual workload and conditions determine what a homeowner can finish.
