How to Store an Electric Mower for Winter

A good storage plan treats the mower, battery and charger as separate components with their own instructions.

The direct answer

Clean and inspect the mower, isolate its power, and store each component in the conditions its manual specifies. Battery charge level and permitted temperatures vary by model. Check the actual pack and charger, and measure the folded mower instead of relying on shipping dimensions.

Make three storage decisions

The mower chassis, battery and charger do not necessarily belong in the same winter location. A dry shed may suit the folded mower but fall outside the pack’s storage-temperature instructions. Conversely, a battery’s permitted operating range does not establish where the entire mower can be stored.

Record the mower model and serial number, the model printed on each pack and the charger model. Keep the matching instructions together. This matters when you have older and newer batteries in the same platform or a replacement charger bought separately. Brand name alone does not identify the storage rule.

Prepare the mower before the final storage move

Follow its isolation, cleaning and inspection procedure, and deal with damage rather than discovering it on the first spring mow. Check the blade, catcher, clipping attachments, guards and cables. Put removable accessories together so a missing chute or mulch insert does not delay the next season.

The EGO LM2156SP family manual calls for a clean, dry storage location away from corrosive materials such as fertiliser and deicing salt, and warns against a solid plastic cover trapping moisture. Consult the maintenance guide for the model-specific cleaning distinction. Electric equipment needs no gasoline draining, but it still needs preparation.

Battery instructions differ: two documented examples

These examples show why a universal “store every lithium battery at half charge” instruction is insufficient. Match the exact received pack and current manual before acting.

Battery instructions differ: two documented examples
Pack/manual exampleOff-season charge guidanceTemperature/location guidance
EGO listed North American 56V packs, including BA3360T and BA5600TFor over 30 days: 30–50%; manual also directs a full charge every six monthsDry and below 80°F for that extended-storage instruction
Toro 21469 manual, 88980 pack2–3 green battery indicators; avoid fully charged or fully depleted off-season storageCharge/store at 41–104°F; enclosed, clean and dry; remove from mower and charger

Do not assume the battery handles every storage task

The EGO battery manual describes automatic self-maintenance toward about 30% after more than a month, but expressly names BA2240T and BA4480T variants as exceptions to that feature. Check the pack rather than borrowing a general answer intended for another model or region.

Automatic electronics also do not inspect a cracked housing, move a battery out of an unsuitable shed or resolve moisture. Keep the instructions for recharge checks and the next use with your storage record. Do not force repeated deep discharges or use a homemade “recovery” method because a pack has been idle.

Will an unheated garage or shed work?

Compare the location’s expected conditions with the applicable storage instructions, including cold nights and warm sun on a closed building. If the battery location falls outside its permitted range, choose another suitable place. “Indoors” and “dry” are useful descriptions, but do not by themselves answer the temperature question.

The WORX WG779 manual gives its own tool/battery use-storage ambient range of 32–113°F and charging range of 32–104°F. Those are not EGO or Toro rules. Check the separately supplied pack and charger instructions as well, and keep equipment out of reach of children and away from damage.

Fold or stand the mower only as instructed

A folding handle is not proof that any vertical position is allowed. Use the permitted position, engage the correct latches and protect the control cables. An exposed underside includes a sharp blade, and a stored mower must remain stable.

The Toro 21469 has a specific vertical-stow procedure, including battery/start-button removal and handle settings. Read the complete serial-appropriate instructions. For every model, measure the actual stored width, depth and height with the relevant parts fitted; a retailer’s carton dimensions cannot prove that a shelf or narrow bay will fit.

Keep a useful storage card

A small record prevents repeated guesswork when spring arrives. Note what you actually checked, and leave future measurements blank until you have made them.

  • Mower model/serial, battery models and charger model.
  • Manual reference and storage temperature/charge guidance for each component.
  • Any recharge-check interval explicitly required by that manual.
  • Measured folded dimensions and permitted storage orientation.
  • Unresolved repairs or parts to obtain before next use.

Before mowing again

Inspect for damage, make sure parts and guards are present, and bring equipment into its permitted conditions before charging or operation. Charge as instructed and follow the normal start procedure. Stop for abnormal indicators or operation rather than trying to work through them.

If useful runtime seems different, compare similar mowing conditions before diagnosing aging. Our battery runtime guide separates one-charge time from service life. A mower returning from winter is also a good reason to check cut height and blade condition before the lawn’s growth accelerates.

Common questions

Should every mower battery be stored at 50%?

No. Follow the exact pack instructions. Manufacturers may specify a range, LED indication or automatic maintenance with model-specific exceptions.

Can I leave the battery in the mower all winter?

Follow its manual. The reviewed EGO mower and Toro 21469 instructions remove the pack for storage; the Toro instructions also remove it from the charger for extended storage.

Can every electric mower be stored upright?

No. Use only a position permitted for that exact mower, with its required handle, cable and stability checks.
